On Stage Two our runners tackled our mountain stage. Arguably the most taxing stage of the race, this 44km trail includes a seemingly endless climb in soft snow up and over Mt Kabla.
Temperatures on the highest ground dipped below -30c early on and stayed low all day. By nightfall it was -25c even down at lake level at Arrenjarka Camp.
The cold weather has taken it’s toll and a few runners have been forced to retire. Lee Haswell, Kathryn De Ferrer and Doug White have withdrawn from the race. Jutta Musigk was a DNS on Stage Two. Tania Hodgkinson will receive a time penalty for assistance at the final checkpoint today but continues in the race.
