It’s been blisteringly hot out there today. Wildlife sightings have been fewer as the animals seem to know better than us and moved off the plains to avoid the heat. No such luck for the runners who tackled the longest stage of the race, a stage that ends with the most difficult climb of the race.
As a consequence, a few runners haven’t been able to complete the course today, but all are safe and well now at camp. Hopefully with some rest and refuelling they’ll be able to start out again tomorrow.
This morning’s stage started not long after sun up. Our helicopter flew out of the rising sun and made a low pass over the heads of the runners to announce the start. At the other end of the day, they were welcomed to our camp on Ol Jogi by the 2 orphaned elephants who are cared for here. They made a welcome visit to camp under the watchful eyes of their handlers, causing a flurry of elephant selfies as the sun went down.
