The roar of lions kept some of the runners awake over the course of the night. One of those rare things which is both a memorable, once-in-a-lifetime experience and a massive inconvenience at the same time. Particularly if you’re 3 days deep into a multi-stage race across the baking savannah.
The stage today began with a dramatic run down through a canyon carved out of the red earth by countless years of rain. The ripples in the canyon walls and the rock-topped towers loom over the footprints of hyenas who had passed through overnight.
Before reaching the first checkpoint, there was an opportunity to meet Alfie and orphan rhino who is under the constant care of the amazing team at the conservancy. Expect the runners to add rhino selfie profile pictures once the event is over.
The morning was relatively cool but from midday onwards, the temperature shot up. Sections of the course today were long straight drags along the border of the conservancies, mind-bending straights which feel something like being on a treadmill, making the afternoon a serious mental challenge.
All runners are now safe and well at tonight’s camp. Our tents are pitched tonight on the football pitch beside a local primary school and we’ve had plenty of inquisitive kids around to help in cheering in the runners.
Tomorrow there’ll be a staggered start. Those in the top 12 overall will set off at 8am, and the rest will start at 7am.
