The second stage of the Desert Ultra began with a serene sunrise over the sandy riverbed campsite. Runners headed out northwest toward Namibia’s highest peak, Brandberg, a colossal granite formation nicknamed “Fire Mountain” for its sunset hues.
The first 25km presented a steady ascent through rocky terrain along compacted 4×4 trails. The rugged underfoot conditions were tempered by breathtaking vistas of the desert and occasional signs of resilient desert flora. In the latter half, runners transitioned to sandy trails and the dry Ugab River bed, where the merciless desert environment tested their endurance and spirit.
Exceptional Performances Amid Rugged Terrain
Once again, Jon Shield claimed victory in the men’s category with a strong time of 5:39:00, further solidifying his lead in the overall standings. Hot on his heels, Carla Andre continued to dominate the women’s field and crossed the finish line second overall and first female with a time of 6:50:00, showcasing her exceptional endurance and skill.
For the men, Kasper Fisker (7:04:00) and Carlos Constantino (7:11:00) battled for the podium after James Adams’ unfortunate DNF, while David Nicolas (7:46:00) delivered a consistent performance to round out the top five. In the women’s race, Rosanna Morani finished second in 7:30:00, with Lauren Gregory (7:58:00) and Ioana Barbu (8:11:00) taking third and fourth, respectively. The battle for the podium places is hotting up in both the Women’s and Men’s fields, with less than an hour separating second to fifth!
Grit and Determination Across the Field
There were plenty of noteworthy stories throughout the stage. Rose Blackie (8:30:00) and Hannah Goldring (8:49:00) delivered strong finishes in the women’s top six, while Marshall Maine (8:11:00) and Harry Edmonds (8:17:00) put in commendable efforts to secure top-ten spots in the men’s field.
A United Effort: Peter and Marianne Kleist
The Kleist couple, Peter and Marianne, once again demonstrated their inspiring partnership, crossing the finish line together in 10:24:00. Their shared determination and teamwork have made them a highlight of the race, embodying the spirit of perseverance that defines the Desert Ultra.
DNFs and the Harsh Reality of the Desert
Stage Two’s unforgiving terrain took its toll, with notable competitors such as James Adams, Carly Stretton, and others unable to complete the stage. Their struggles highlight the immense physical and mental challenges posed by the Namib Desert. If they’re feeling up to it they will be able to rejoin the race at a later stage!
As runners rest and prepare for Stage Three, the grueling ascent to Brandberg Mountain and the descent into the Ugab River bed have left their mark. The resilience required to overcome such harsh conditions underscores the extraordinary nature of this event, where every finish is a triumph and every step is earned against the backdrop of Namibia’s iconic landscape.
The competition heats up as the desert unfolds more challenges in the days ahead.
