DESERT ULTRA 2024 / STAGE FOUR RESULTS

Damara Dash. Shorter Distance, Same Relentless Challenges.

Stage Four of the Desert Ultra, a 22km half-marathon, may have been the shortest leg of the race, but it was no less gruelling. The 45°C heat, unrelenting winds, and an almost complete lack of shade made this stage a true test of endurance and willpower. Starting at midday, runners faced a steady uphill climb on sandy terrain, with the coveted Red Jersey title for King or Queen of the Desert adding an extra layer of motivation.

Starting at midday, runners faced a steady uphill climb on sandy terrain, with the coveted title for King or Queen of the Desert adding an extra layer of motivation.

The course gradually transitioned to rockier ground after checkpoint two, allowing runners to pick up the pace, though the intensity of the environment remained unforgiving.

Jon Shield continued his commanding lead, finishing first in a blistering 2:28:00. His efficiency and adaptability to the harsh desert climate have been extraordinary throughout the event.

For the women, Carla Andre claimed the top spot in 3:03:00, securing her dominance among the female competitors. Her consistency under the punishing conditions has almost certainly secured her the win, if she can stay in the race.

On the men’s podium, Carlos Constantino (2:52:00) edged out Kasper Fisker (2:58:00) for second place in Stage Four, both showcasing strength and determination as the race heads into its final, gruelling day.

Among the women, Rosanna Morani (3:37:00) delivered a strong second-place performance, fighting through the pain, while Ioana Barbu claimed third in 3:54:00, maintaining her position in the overall top five.

Harry Edmonds (3:17:00) delivered a strong finish in the men’s field, securing seventh overall. His steady improvement and persistence have been evident as he moves closer to the race’s final test.

Emmanuel Brunner (3:52:00) bounced back from a challenging earlier stage, pushing himself through the heat and finishing with one of his fastest performances so far.

Lauren Gregory (4:22:00) persevered through the stage’s toughest moments, finishing in the women’s top five despite the unrelenting conditions alongside Rose Blackie.

Kim Sonntag (4:38:00) remained steadfast, demonstrating her consistent effort as she climbed the overall standings, maintaining her sixth-place position among women.

Peter and Marianne Kleist (5:34:00) once again crossed the line together. The married couple’s shared journey continues to inspire their fellow competitors and remind everyone of the deeper connections forged in such extreme places.

With the shortest stage complete, runners now face the 92km final stretch, the ultimate test of their endurance and will. As they rest in camp, surrounded by the striking beauty of the Namib Desert, thoughts turn to the last hurdle.

Stage Four has reaffirmed the Desert Ultra’s reputation as one of the most punishing endurance races in the world. While the DNFs mount, those still standing must dig deeper than ever as they prepare for the final push.
