Stage one of the Ice Ultra has drawn to a close here in Sweden.
The runners departed Stora Sjöfallets Mountain Lodge at 7:30 local time, heading into the forest and then right out onto their first frozen lake. The day took our runners through the UNESCO World Heritage site of Laponia before slowly climbing steadily up onto a high plateau with blistering winds.
After a final steep ascent the runners found themselves in the remote hunter’s cabins at Aktse.
First over the line was Men’s stage winner Alexander Welch, followed by 2nd overall and Women’s stage winner Ioana Barbu.
Behind Alex came Marc Rhodes and Dave Benison to round out the Men’s top three, and Sheena Berry and Katie Hislop rounded out the Women’s top three.
As for now night has descended on camp, and as our final runners make their way into the safety of these cosy, secluded cabins we’ll bid you goodnight.
